Another day brings another series of embarrassing headlines for the UK, particularly for those receiving letters from TV licensing. We will discuss that first, but we will also cover other topics, such as a new form of digital ID being introduced quietly, the targeting of children, Bridget Phillipson's embarrassing comments regarding the definition of a woman, and the watering down of language tests for illegal migrants seeking asylum. Additionally, the Met Police has admitted to hiring violent thugs and rapists due to lax checks. You couldn't make this stuff up. ## TV Licensing Concerns Let's begin with TV licensing, which is a bit of a bugbear for me. I have filed my notice stating that I do not need a TV licence. I do this practically every time they send me a reminder. I say "reminder," but there is no legal obligation to file such a thing. I thought I would just inform them that I don't need a licence because I don't watch TV; I simply don't have the time. However, the letters people receive, such as one stating "enforcement visit approved," can be misleading. Most people might think this means they are actually going to enforce something and that they have some power when they turn up. This is not true. Unless they have a warrant, which only gives them the power to enter and examine whether you have any TV receiving apparatus, they have absolutely no powers whatsoever. You can withdraw, in writing, the implied right of access to visit your home. If you haven't done so by letter, you can put a notice on your door. Looking at the enforcement notice, I genuinely believe this crosses a legal threshold and makes it unlawful. They cannot issue this notice, as it carries a significant meaning. If tested in court, I think they would come unstuck. If you receive such notices and wish to file that you don't need a licence, that is your choice, but there is no legal obligation to do so. My guidance would be to avoid talking to them; you are under no obligation to engage. Even if they have a warrant, you only need to provide reasonable assistance, which is not clearly defined. Despite filing my notice, I received another reminder stating that the status ends at the end of October. I filed it again, and if I hear from them again, they will be in trouble, as that will mark the beginning of my record of harassment. ## Digital ID Concerns Moving on to digital ID, there is another way they are rolling everyone into this system, whether they want it or not. This feels like a bait and switch. They will present something to you, claiming it is useful, similar to the online hospital I mentioned the other day. Some people will accept it without much thought, and before they know it, they will be tied into a digital ID system. Now, they are targeting school children. GCSE students will soon be able to access their results digitally. This will involve a unique learner number, which I suspect will be tied into some form of digital ID, including personal information such as sex, date of birth, address, and qualifications. I believe this is another bait and switch.
