The EU Commission has fined X€120 million. In this video, I'll discuss why that is, what they say, and what I think is likely to happen. The UK economy is in tatters. I hate to say I told you so, but I was right when Labour were first elected. I have been vocal about this since, and it turns out that I have been correct in asserting that the situation is dire, especially when Poundland is closing hundreds of shops, and employers are cutting staff at a higher rate than since the pandemic, with unemployment rising to 5%. I read that Poundland is reducing its number of shops from around 800 to approximately 650, meaning they are closing over 150 stores. This impacts the number of people who stock shelves, man the tills, and run operations—resulting in job cuts due to business uncertainty and increased operational costs, including national insurance contributions, which I previously noted was a fundamentally poor decision by the government. The current budget and ongoing uncertainty lead to some grim statistics.

While ministers claim they are increasing jobs and rebuilding the economy, the real statistics paint a very different picture. The figures I mention are sourced from genuine reports. According to the Office for National Statistics, when we compare October 2025 with the previous year, there are 180,000 fewer employees. Keep this statistic in mind when politicians claim we are creating more jobs. The largest increase in employment is in the public administration and defence sector, with an increase of 16,000. In stark contrast, the wholesale and retail sectors suffered the largest decrease, losing 71,000 jobs.

So when people say Labour is an anti-business party, these statistics prove that point. Comparing October and September this year, there was also a decrease in payroll employment, with a reduction of 32,000 employees alone between these two months. Statistically, this should be considered provisional as estimates are likely to be revised. This can also be noted in the payroll employee growth for September, which revised a decrease from 10,000 to 32,000, indicating these numbers could worsen.

A recent graph from the Telegraph illustrates that businesses are freezing hiring and cutting jobs, with this trend having been ongoing since 2022. The drastic changes in unemployment and vacancies have been exacerbated by Labour's policies, which are significantly impacting businesses. I have consistently stated that increasing costs for businesses leads to fewer job opportunities and reduced operational activity.

There’s a growing uncertainty amongst employers, particularly with the employment rights bill now allowing unlimited compensation for employees claiming unfair dismissal. Such financial implications could potentially devastate a company should a significant claim arise, leading to cuts in job numbers.

The Bank of England has also issued an urgent warning regarding the economy, stating that employers are cutting staff at the fastest pace since the pandemic. This aligns with the trends I predicted upon Labour’s election, highlighting rapid school closures and business bankruptcies.

Now, regarding the EU Commission's fine against X, many might already know my views on the EU's regulations. They claim that X has misled users by allowing subscriptions for a verified badge that suggests a level of authenticity that might not be true. I doubt the average user would be confused by a blue checkmark indicating a paid subscription.

Moreover, this fine raises questions about user understanding—participants in various platforms, similar to Facebook and Instagram, demonstrate no public confusion regarding subscription models. Furthermore, the assertion that X has inadequate transparency overlooks that platforms need not infantilise users or assume they lack the ability to comprehend changes in service. To be classified as misleading, there must be some deceit or a substantial error, not simply an opposing opinion.

X, like LinkedIn and YouTube, has a robust ad transparency centre, and allegations against it could apply equally to other platforms without similar penalties being imposed. In my view, the EU's action reflects a personal vendetta against Elon Musk and the company rather than a genuine regulatory issue.

As to the practical implications, the Digital Services Act grants the EU the authority to levy penalties, but whether X will eventually pay this fine remains uncertain. Legal jurisdiction issues, appeals, and challenges could prolong the process for years, with the possibility that it may never result in payment. The headlines about this fine can be misleading as they give the impression that payment is imminent, but these issues could drag on for a considerable time.
