I’ll see a lot of videos where someone grabs like this and the response is this, as though this really works to compromise your opponent. But in reality, if someone grabs you like that and they really mean to grab you, this is just not going to work. I’m fairly strong, but this is just not a strong movement. It’s just not going to work.

What will work is a combination of grabbing the hand here and stepping in with the arm. So, when someone grabs you here, I’m going to grab this hand to twist it this way round. If I separate it to show you what’s happening, this is going to weaken this grip here and compromise the whole arm when I step in. So, when this happens here, I’m grabbing this to turn it and I’m going to step in. Those other videos are right in one respect in that the elbow is a weak joint, but not if you’re trying to pull it around this way because this won’t work.

What you can do is step in, using this arm as a tool. Stepping in using your weight into this arm whilst you grab this wrist here to turn the whole thing gives you control of the whole arm. Then you can control the arm. So again, from this side, I’m going to grab the wrist here. What this is doing is compromising the wrist at the same time as compromising the elbow, but not like this. I’m going to use the wrist and this arm, along with my weight, to step in and compromise the arm here with this wrist.

While I’m twisting this and pushing down and stepping forward, this will take control of the arm here and incapacitate the opponent. So when someone grabs you here, they’re grabbing you seriously. They’re not just grabbing you in a light fashion. No one does this lightly unless it’s a joke. So if they do that strongly, this is just not going to work because they’re already going to be strong here. The only way you can do it is by compromising this wrist in this direction as well as the arm here. You can see already that this compromises the wrist and the arm. When you step in and use the two together, using your body weight, you take control of your opponent.
