Now, you’re all familiar with ANPR, automatic number plate recognition cameras. They instantly scan a registration and can flag up on any system where the vehicle is known or anything else. There are more than 12,000 of these fixed AMPR cameras around the country and a couple of thousand mobile ones which help to generate alerts for a vehicle of interest, whereby it is obviously linked to some kind of serious crime or whatever. But how would you feel if they then use these cameras to profile and track your journeys on an everyday basis for what they term as a suspicious journey? They are now talking about trying AI technology to automatically scan and monitor everyday journeys across the country, starting in small areas and so on. This creeps around, dragging lots more details and more people into this system to track and identify what they call suspicious journeys. Now, what is a suspicious journey? If somebody goes to and from a certain place regularly, who is to say that is suspicious? If they ordinarily go between A and B and then, on one occasion, they go somewhere else, is that then a suspicious journey because they don’t normally do that? What if it’s late at night? Is that a suspicious journey because they don’t usually do that? What if they get a call from a family member and need to attend to something; will that journey be tracked and identified as suspicious? It would be bad enough if this was tracked and logged somewhere in a database or some kind of useless record of a suspicious journey committed by this vehicle at this time, date, and place. It’s akin to non-crime hate incidents, where it’s not a crime, but someone’s upset by it, so they record it anyway. We have police chiefs agreeing that those are stupid and shouldn’t exist. However, we’re seeing this creep into other areas. Up to now, police have used this system of cameras just for vehicles of interest to identify those they really need to look at. But now, with what they’re calling the find and profile app, it goes much further. It uses AI and machine learning technology to analyze data recorded by these thousands of cameras to identify what they define as a suspicious journey and then stop those vehicles. They might stop people because they think you’re on some kind of suspicious journey. This is bizarre and will be an unfolding story.
